THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME
A name carried across land,
sea and centuries.
Riada is a name with an old Gaelic echo. It calls to mind Dál Riata—the early medieval Gaelic kingdom whose people and culture reached from the north-east of Ireland across the narrow sea to western Scotland.
For us, it speaks of movement, kinship and the enduring connection between horse, landscape and home.
Dál Riata:
a kingdom between shores.
a kingdom between shores.
By the sixth century, Gaelic-speaking communities had established the kingdom known as Dál Riata. Its world was not divided by the sea; the water joined its shores. Boats, stories, craft and kinship travelled between Antrim and Argyll.
At Dunadd, the kingdom's great royal centre in Argyll, a footprint was carved into living rock. Historians believe it may have formed part of the inauguration of kings—a promise between a ruler and the land beneath his feet.
“To move forward, while belonging deeply to where you began.”
That is the spirit we found in the name Riada: Irish in origin, open to the world, and made to endure the journey.
The mare who wore the weather.
Irish folklore has always understood the horse as more than an animal. Horses carry heroes, cross boundaries and sense what lies beyond human sight. They belong equally to the green field and the otherworld.
Our own Riada legend is inspired by that tradition. It tells of a white mare who travelled the western edge of Ireland through rain, salt wind and silver mist.
Wherever she passed, the grass rose again behind her and the road home became clear.
The people said she wore the weather like a cloak—not to hide from it, but to move freely through it.
Protection
Like the mare's legendary cloak, every rug begins with dependable protection from the elements.
Freedom
Made around the horse—not the other way round—for comfort through every stride, roll and gallop.
Belonging
Designed with care, shaped by real conditions and grounded in a long tradition.
Made for the weather.
Made for the journey home.
Riada brings an old Irish spirit into a new generation of equine rugs: quietly beautiful, thoughtfully fitted and ready for whatever comes over the hill.
Historical context informed by research from Historic Environment Scotland and National Museums Scotland. The white mare story is Riada's original brand legend, inspired by recurring horse motifs in Irish folklore.
